POCKET PROTECTORS

Feature and photography by Chris Courtney

Fenders are kind of like the pocket protectors of the bike world. When it gets dirty & muddy, everyone could use some form of protection between bike & the elements. They are seen as nerdy; just like the uber-geeky pocket protector.  I chose to be 'cool' on my last ride by rocking no fenders.  After an hour of sunny climbing I reached the top of the trail and the nerd gods decided to frown upon me.  The skies exploded: fat rain drops splattered on the ground, reminding me that sometimes pocket protectors are cool when your pens explode.  However, as I ducked down the trail to get out of the rain, I was reminded that sometimes being cool is alright. Mud, twigs, moss, rotting wood and leaves flung up as I rode.  The faster I went, the dirtier I got.  It got to the point where I wanted to close my mouth to keep crap from flying into it, but the I was having too much fun.  Smiling like an idiot, I realized that while being a nerd has its merits; the cool kids always have more fun.
